What the heck is a “Vampire” or PRP facial?
Vampire facial received it’s infamous name due a process that involves extracting a patient’s blood from their arm, spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma cells from the red and white blood cells to be re-injected into the face via skin needling. The skin needling process is completed using a micropen with twelve sterile stainless steel micro-needles that superficially create micro “injuries” in the skin, which triggers new collagen synthesis yet does not pose the risk of permanent scarring. The result is smoother, firmer and younger looking skin. PRP facials with micro-needling aim to stimulate the body’s own collagen production to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, skin laxity and scarring. It has also been successfully used for hair restoration in cases of hair thinning.
What are the components of the human blood?
Once the blood has been spun in a centrifuge, the blood will separate into their respective layers. The first layer is the plasma, which contains water, ions, proteins, nutrients, wastes and gases. The second layer contains white blood cells and platelets (where the platelet-rich plasma is extracted). The third layer is the red blood cells. The platelet-rich plasma is the beneficial part of the blood that contains growth factors and stem cells.
What does the skin micorneedling entail?
First the physician will isolate and extract the platelet rich proteins from the patient’s blood once it has been spun in a centrifuge. Then, the provider uses a micro-needling pen with tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate collagen and elastin production. The provider applies the PRP onto the face and into the mirco-punctures so the PRP is absorbed deep into the tissues. The PRP, with its respective stem cells and growth factors, is applied to the face as a serum to provide tightening, promote healing and collagen growth. The procedure is normally completed within 30‐60 minutes depending on the required treatment and anatomical site.
What are the Potential benefits of microneedling?
Reduces appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
Firms and smooths skin tone and texture
Promotes softer, younger looking skin with fewer signs of aging
Improves appearance of acne scars and traumatic scars
Lightens hyperpigmentation and sun spots
Reduces pore size
Why PRP facial?
Now a days there are so many skin rejuvenation options, so what makes PRP the best option? Cosmetic surgery can remove excess skin and make the person appear younger. But, a surgical facelift is invasive and be more than what’s needed for some people.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers lift the skin away from the bone to restore youthful volume and shape. But HA fillers can cause problems near the eye. Also, the injector of HA fillers can chase a wrinkle and create a shape that looks foreign to the person’s face or even foreign to this planet. Botox essentially paralyzes the muscles of face to create clean smoothing of wrinkles, however over time and repeated injections the structure of muscle tissue and skin begin to break down. PRP is an safe, affordable and effective way to rejuvenate the skin naturally using your body’s own nutrients instead of using synthetic fillers that overtime can actually break down collagen rather than supporting it’s regeneration. PRP facials allows the body to heal itself. It is your bodies own growth factors and stem cells that are regenerating specific tissues, and who wouldn't want that!
Are there any side effects of PRP?
After the procedure, the skin will be red and flushed in appearance in a similar way to moderate sunburn. You may also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch on the area being treated. This will diminish greatly after a few hours following treatments and within the next 24 hours the skin will be completely healed. After 3 days most visible erythema will be absolved.
