Is getting a facelift a thing of the past?

Is getting a facelift a thing of the past?

What is a surgical facelift?

A facelift (medically termed Rhytidectomy) is a surgical cosmetic procedure that improves signs of aging in the face (and often the neck as well). It does this by surgically lifting the skin to tighten loose areas, repositioning underlying fat to smooth wrinkles, and removing excess skin to eliminate sagging – creating a younger appearance overall.

The surgery is done by a board-certified plastic surgeon and involves making an incision that runs from the hairline at the temples, goes around the ear, and then down into the lower scalp. If the neck is also done, a second incision is made under the chin. Mini-lifts are the same procedure but with shorter incisions and less effects than full-lifts.

The results of a facelift can be drastically successful and life-changing for people. However, the procedure does come with a few noteworthy downsides: it requires anesthesia, can be quite costly (several thousands of dollars), and poses risks (such as bleeding, scarring, infection, and prolonged swelling).

Additionally, the recovery time can be painful (warranting prescription medications), uncomfortable (swelling, bruising) and lengthy; in general, it may take 2 weeks to resume normal daily activity, 4 weeks to engage in strenuous exercise, and several months for skin to be back to “normal” again. Lastly, desired outcomes are not guaranteed and sometimes a subsequent surgery is necessary.

What are non-surgical alternatives?

Skin tissue naturally loses its strength, elasticity, thickness, and vascularization over time (primarily from the decreased production of collagen beginning in the early 30s) – leading to fine lines and wrinkles and skin that is thinner, looser, and more fragile.

The good news is there are many ways to support healthy, youthful skin for the long-term involving diet, lifestyle, and health management. Additionally, there are non-invasive and minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures that can be done to minimize or reverse signs of aging that have already appeared.

The upside to less invasive cosmetic procedures is that compared to surgical facelifts, they are generally less expensive, less painful and do not require surgery, anesthesia, or downtime. At LIVV, in addition to PRP facials, PRP injections and naturopathic interventions, we are very proud and excited to introduce one of our newest technologies – the morpheus8, an FDA-approved radio-frequency micro-needling treatment.

The morpheus8 is an advanced machine that combines both radio-frequency (RF) and micro-needling to resurface and rejuvenate the skin. It is referred to as the non-surgical facelift, as it is a safe and minimally invasive anti-aging alternative to surgical facelifts. It can target the face as well as other body areas such as the abdomen and thighs.

The morpheus8 is designed and scientifically proven to stimulate collagen and elastin production, improve blood flow/nutrition, and remodel fat tissue to successfully lift, tone, and tighten the skin. It also works to improve skin texture and scarring. Oh, and this amazing therapy is suitable for all skin tones!

Common areas treated include the under eyes (eye bags), cheeks (large pores, acne scars), chest, and stomach (skin laxity) – and it can be used to treat stretch marks and scars anywhere on the body! Interestingly, it can be used on the underarms to reduce sweating in those areas.

So, how does it work? Micropins penetrate the deep layers of the skin to reshape the tissues and energy waves from the RF simultaneously heat the deep layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production. The micro-injuries and therapeutic heating induce an immediate healing response to replenish old, damaged skin and replace it with a layer of fresh, vital cells!

Note: There may be some heat and discomfort during the treatment, as well as minimal redness, swelling, and soreness after the treatment. It’s important to avoid touching the face after treatment and you may be instructed to apply a special serum and sunscreen for skin protection.  For optimal effects, it is recommended to do up to 5 sessions separated by 3-6 weeks each with yearly maintenance sessions thereafter.

Results are seen within a few days, peak within a few weeks, and can last up to 2-5 years! With all of these effective and more natural anti-aging treatment options, including our grand morpheus8, surgical facelifts are becoming a thing of the past. Give us a call today to set up an appointment and let this therapy work wonders for your skin (without the worries that come with more invasive approaches)!
