What is BPC 157?

You may have heard of BPC 157, a peptide around which there has been much buzz recently. Similar to other peptides like collagen and glutathione, BPC 157 supplements have been found to have numerous healing and regenerative properties.

It has been seen to improve wound and muscle healing, reduce inflammation, and boost tissue regeneration, among other benefits. For this reason, most people, particularly those who believe in using healing compounds that occur naturally in the body, have been touting its effectiveness.

But what exactly is BPC 157? BPC stands for ‘Body Protecting Compound, and it is a peptide consisting of 15 amino acids. A peptide is a short-chain made up of between two, and fifty amino acids joined together by peptide bonds. This means that it is not officially a protein, as proteins have chains of over 50 amino acids.

BPC 157 is produced naturally in the stomach’s gastric juices, and its primary function is to protect and heal the gut. However, its benefits extend far beyond the gut, and evidence shows that it accelerates healing and repair wherever it is applied.

Scientists started researching the BPC peptide in the early 1990s, with one of the earliest reports on it appearing in the Journal of Physiology in 1993. Although research surrounding it is ongoing, initial results are promising, particularly in its tissue regenerative abilities. In rodents, it has been seen to relieve stomach ulcers and accelerate trauma, bone, and joint healing.

However, all the information we have so far has been derived from animal studies.  This has somehow limited its uses among humans, but the more it is studied, the more promise it shows. Present results are particularly exciting for the fields of sports and regenerative medicine.

What are the health benefits of BPC 157 Supplements?

BPC 157 has been seen to have a host of health benefits. These include:

It promotes angiogenesis– Angiogenesis is the process in which new blood cells are created. BPC 157 facilitates this process, which then increases capillary growth in various areas, enabling better movement of blood and nutrients.  This process encourages healing, particularly of wounds.

It improves gut health– Because BPC 157 is synthetically created from a protein in the stomach, it is quite useful in treating stomach conditions like ulcers or other issues emanating from the gut. Other than gut healing, it also improves digestion. This peptide has also been seen to improve inflammation caused by conditions such as arthritis.

It encourages soft tissue repair– One of the most significant benefits of this peptide is its ability to accelerate rejuvenation of muscle, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. It is thought to do this by stimulating human growth receptors in injured tissue. BPC 157 also resolves old injuries and improves joint mobility. This makes it especially appealing to people in sports.

It promotes fibroblasts and collagen production- Fibroblasts are biological cells needed to maintain the structural framework of body tissues like tendons and ligaments. BPC 157 has been seen to increase these fibroblasts and also contribute to the production of collagen. Collagen is another crucial element when it comes to the structure of skin, tendons, and joints. These two elements not only strengthen these tissues but also encourage quick healing following injury.

BPC 157 and Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease characterized by ulcers and inflammation. It mainly affects the small intestines but could also be found in the mouth, stomach, and colon.

Crohn’s causes swelling and thickening when it affects bowel tissues, which may block the bowel passage. This can also prevent the bowel from absorbing nutrients effectively. Some of the most common symptoms of Crohn’s disease include diarrhea and abdominal pains. Because it is a chronic condition, people living with Crohn’s are likely to be on lifelong medication.

BPC157 is emerging as a powerful therapy for Crohn’s disease. Some studies show that it is successful in healing lesions in the gut system, such as the stomach and small intestines.  Because it is potent in combating inflammation, BPC 157 supplements are useful in managing Crohn’s disease, which causes inflammation in various areas of the digestive tract. It may also reduce the size, number, and severity of ulcers in people with Crohn’s.

BPC 157 Protocols, Dosage, and Treatments

BPC 157 can be administered in various forms, depending on the purpose. There are oral tablets or capsules, sublingual applications (under the tongue), intramuscular injections, and skin patches, among others.

You will find that oral tablets and injections (subcutaneous and intramuscular) are the most commonly used formats. Most stomach or intestinal complaints are best treated orally. Injections are ideal for inflammation, joint pain, muscle sprains, and torn ligaments.

When it comes to dosage,200-300mcg is recommended for intramuscular injections per day. This, however, is relative and will depend on your body weight and needs after a physician’s evaluation.

Some studies show that anywhere between 200-800mcg per day is safe.  It is important to note that oral doses may be degraded by the digestive system, compromising their effectiveness. This means that higher doses may be needed.

Does BPC 157 cause any side effects?

As mentioned, current BPC 157 research has been carried out on animals, and only small-scale human trials have been done. Anecdotal evidence does not show any immediate adverse effects. That said, extensive research has been conducted on similar peptides, and no adverse side effects have been seen. Additionally, BPC 157 naturally occurs in the body, which means that it is well tolerated.

As with any other supplements, you should start with smaller doses before progressing, depending on how your body reacts. Some of the likely side effects of injections are swelling and redness, and you may also experience headaches, nausea, and dizziness.

BPC 157 Supplements- Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a prescription for BPC 157?

Yes, you do require a prescription from a qualified physician. BPC 157 does not fall under ‘regulated drugs’ because it is still under research; instead, it is classified as ‘research medication.’ Even then, you still require a prescription, and you will not be able to buy it over the counter.

Is BPC 157 legal, and can athletes use it?

Yes, BPC 157 is legal in the United States. Athletes can use this peptide as it does not contain any illegal substances and has not been banned by sports governing body WADA. Similarly, it does not contain any anabolic or androgenic benefits; in other words, it is not a steroid.

How long does BPC 157 take to work?

This depends on several factors, such as the severity of the condition being treated and also from person to person. Most people, however, report seeing results between 24-48 hours after starting a cycle, particularly where the administration is done using injections. More significant results appear over two weeks and extend to the end of the treatment cycle.

How should I store BPC 157 after reconstituting it?

If you are using injectable BPC 157, you will most likely receive it in powder form. To be able to use it, you will be required to mix it with water. Whether it is in powder or the reconstituted form, store it away from sunlight and heat. You may keep it in a cool place for up to 10 weeks. The best storage method, however, is refrigeration, where it will keep for about six months. On the other hand, oral capsules can be stored in a cool place and do not require refrigeration.

Where can I get BPC 157?

Because this peptide is still a relatively ‘new’ product, it is not widely available. As mentioned, you require a prescription from a physician to purchase it. Unfortunately, most conventional doctors may not be familiar with its benefits and may be reluctant to prescribe it.  Similarly, because BPC 157 naturally occurs in the gastric juice, it is not patentable, and you are unlikely to find it in a conventional pharmacy or your local hospital.

Your best bet is a naturopathic clinic that understands the benefits of using naturally occurring substances in the body to heal disease. You can also purchase it from a few discerning websites, but be warned that unscrupulous people may be selling counterfeit products to make a quick buck.

Are Peptides bad for you?

No, on the contrary, peptides have many health benefits.  These short-chain amino acids are used in many sports, health, and beauty supplements. Because of their small size, they are easily absorbed in the body and penetrate the skin effortlessly. Other than BPC 157, another common peptide is collagen, found in hair, skin, and nails. This peptide can slow down aging, improve skin appearance, and promote healthy joints. Another crucial peptide is glutathione, the master oxidant responsible for keeping disease at bay.
