The three main types of (intravenous) IV fluids – isotonic, hypotonic, and hypertonic are classified by their osmolality, which reflects the concentration of solutes in relation to blood:

3. Hypertonic fluids have a higher concentration of solutes than blood, drawing fluid out of cells and into the extracellular space. They are useful in replacing electrolytes and can also be used to manage conditions such as cerebral edema, though they are less commonly used to treat dehydration.
